When to Start Wedding Dress Shopping: A Lesson from My Experience

Hello lovely brides-to-be!

Congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting time filled with love, joy, and a never-ending list of things to do. Among those many tasks, there's one that stands out: finding the perfect wedding dress. As a bridal consultant who has been on both sides of the bridal boutique counter, I'm here to share some valuable advice and a personal story to help you navigate this important journey.

My Pre-Bridal Consultant Days: A Cautionary Tale

Once upon a time, in the not-so-distant past, I was just like you—a bright-eyed bride-to-be, eager to find "the one". Back then, I had no clue about the intricate world of wedding dress shopping. So, in my blissful ignorance, I began my search a mere couple of months before my big day.

I was super lucky to find a gorgeous off-the-shelf dress, but it was two sizes too big and needed to be taken in. Unfortunately, I lost the original shape of the back of the dress in the process. Don't get me wrong, I still felt beautiful and had the most wonderful wedding day! But I wish I had known what I'm about to share with you—it would have saved me a lot of stress!

The Perfect Timeline!

So, here's the golden nugget of wisdom I wish someone had shared with me: Start your wedding dress shopping a good 18 months in advance. Yes, you heard that right— 18 months! Here's why:

1. The One is Out There, Somewhere

Finding "the one" can take time and a lot of research. There are countless styles, fabrics, and designers to consider. Starting a good 18 months early, allows you to research bridal boutiques, designers and explore a variety of styles without the pressure of a ticking clock.

Once you've researched and found a bridal boutique you'd like to visit, make sure to book your appointment then and there, as they can book up fast!

2. Custom Orders and Designer Lead Times

Most dresses are made to order, which means they can take anywhere from 4 to 8 months to arrive after you've placed your order. So, you should aim to have found your dream gown between 10-12 months before your wedding, which ensures you have plenty of time for the dress to be made, delivered and altered.

3. Alterations, Alterations, Alterations

Unless you're one of the lucky few whose dress fits like a glove when it arrives, you'll need alterations. This can be anything from, raising the hem to having the dress taken in an inch or two.

Keep in mind that alterations can take a few rounds of fittings to get just right!

4. Avoiding the Stress Factor

Wedding planning can be stressful enough without adding the pressure of a last-minute dress hunt. By starting early, you can enjoy the process, savour the moment, and make memories with your loved ones without feeling rushed.

The Step-by-Step Guide to a Stress-Free Dress Journey

18 Months Before

Start browsing magazines, Pinterest, and bridal websites to get an idea of what you like. Book appointments at bridal salons and start trying on dresses. This is your time to dream big and explore all the possibilities.

12-18 Months Before

Book you bridal appointments to try on a variety of styles. Make sure to book in early, as bridal boutiques can book up in advance!

9-10 Months Before

Narrow down your choices and make a decision. Place your order and feel the weight lift off your shoulders as you check this major task off your list.

4-6 Months Before

Your dress should be arriving at the boutique. Once your dress has arrived, ensure you schedule your first alterations appointment with one of our recommended seamstresses.

3-4 Months Before

Have your first fitting (Make sure you have your wedding shoes for your first alterations appointment, so they can alter the hem the correct length... another mistake I made!) Start thinking about accessories!

2-3 Months Before

Time for the final fitting. Any last-minute tweaks can be made during this time period.

1-2 Month Before

Pick up your dress from the seamstress, have it steamed, and make sure it's hanging beautifully in your closet, ready for the big day.

A Final Note

Starting early not only ensures you find the dress of your dreams but also allows you to enjoy the experience without the stress of a time crunch.

So, dear brides, take it from a former bride who learned the hard way: give yourself the gift of time. Start your dress shopping journey a good 18 months in advance, and you'll be on your way to finding that perfect dress, stress-free and ready to say "I do" in style.
